A minimum set of dishes is required in every home, even if people rarely cook. If the family has lovers of complex dishes, then you can not do without a set of high-quality pots, pans and other useful kitchen appliances.

To acquire suitable kitchen utensils, you do not have to go shopping for a long time - just purchase one or more ready-made sets of dishes. I’ll tell you what to look for when buying them.


Most often, there are sets of pots and sets of pans, but pots with pans are rarely completed. Sometimes cookware sets include kitchen accessories as a bonus.

The basic set of pans usually includes three items: a large pan for five to six liters, a medium pan for two to three liters and a liter pan or ladle. This is the minimum that you can’t do without.

Sets of four to five items may additionally include pans of larger and / or smaller sizes, pans with low and / or high sides. I have never met sets of six or more pots.

The basic set of pans consists, as a rule, of two objects: a large frying pan with a diameter of 26–28 cm and an average one with a diameter of 20–24 cm. Less common are sets of three objects, which additionally include a small portioned frying pan with a diameter of 15–18 cm or a frying pan grill.

Mixed cookware sets include pots and pans. Typically, these are gift sets of two pots and pans, or large sets for newcomers and young families - they include five pots and two pans.


Modern cookware is made of cast or stamped aluminum with non-stick coating, stainless steel with non-stick coating and without coating, cast iron with and without enamel, a metal alloy with some types of enamels.

The most popular is non-stick cookware, it produces excellent dishes with a minimum of effort and culinary skills. The only drawback, in my opinion, is its short service life: even expensive and high-quality dishes with daily use and frequent washing in the dishwasher will not last more than two to three years.

For home, I recommend choosing cast aluminum pans. Compared to stamped ones, they are more durable and thicker, more tightly fit to the plate and evenly distribute heat.

Uncovered stainless steel utensils are most often chosen by professional chefs because it is easy to care for and almost unkillable. A set of steel pots is ideal for home cooking, and you will need to get used to stainless steel pans, if you have not used them before. Firstly, when using steel pans, the temperature regime must be strictly observed - if you put the product on an insufficiently heated surface, it will immediately stick and the dish will be spoiled. And secondly, steel is heavier than aluminum, and this must be taken into account.

Metalware with glass enamel lately also at the peak of popularity. People who adhere to the principles of a healthy diet, choose it because of the inertness of the coating to acids contained in food. Products do not enter into a chemical reaction with the metal, while maintaining a maximum of vitamins and minerals. Others buy it because of the beautiful, vibrant appearance to decorate the kitchen.

The advantage of modern aluminum and steel utensils is a multilayer encapsulated bottom, which adds heat capacity and promotes uniform heating.

Sets of cast-iron utensils are a rather rare occurrence; most often, such products acquire one at a time. However, there are exceptions: for example, the American company Loge produces a set of two standard frying pans, a pancake pan and a pot with a lid made of cast iron without coating.

Plate compatibility

When choosing kitchen utensils, you should adhere to the rule: the thicker the bottom, the more evenly the heating will be and the less food will burn on any stove.

Cooking utensils with an encapsulated multilayer bottom is best for cooking. When choosing dishes for induction hobs, it is important to pay attention to a special icon, which indicates the presence of a ferromagnetic disk built into the bottom.

For use in the oven, any metal utensil without plastic elements is suitable. For the manufacture of handle and lid elements, some manufacturers choose heat-resistant plastic and silicone, suitable for use in the oven at temperatures up to 180 ° C.

For cooking in the microwave, no type of metal utensil is suitable - only ceramic, glass, porcelain or plastic.
