I love to cook, but I don't like the smells that penetrate the bedroom or living room during the cooking process. It is good that a quality hood solves this problem.

I’ll tell you what you need to pay attention to when choosing a hood.

Type of hood

Hoods can be of several types: block, dome and built-in.

Block hoods are attached to the wall parallel to the hob; they have a plastic or glass visor for better air intake. Such hoods are suitable for small kitchens.

If your kitchen is more than 12 square meters, you can choose the domed version of the hood - this is a three-dimensional model in the form of a trapezoid or hemisphere. It quickly and efficiently cleans the air in a large kitchen.

Dome hoods are divided into fireplace, island and corner. Fireplaces are installed against the wall, angular - in the corner, island are fixed to the ceiling and can be placed in the center of the room.

The best option will be built-in hoods. Outwardly, they resemble the inverted letter “t”, in which the “leg” is hidden behind the facade of the kitchen. Such hoods fit into the interior of any kitchen.

Most models of hoods are installed above the hob, and their sizes should correspond to each other. The installation height of the hood above the hob varies from 65 to 85 centimeters - depending on the type of stove.


Management of the hoods can be mechanical and electronic.

With a mechanical control method, there are buttons or a slider on the hood; with an electronic control method, a display on which various parameters are displayed.

Modern hoods can also be controlled using the remote control, through the application on a smartphone or tablet.

Maximum performance

The main indicator that determines the quality of the hood is maximum productivity. The hood performance can be calculated using a simple formula. The area of the kitchen must be multiplied by the height of the ceilings, and then by 12. According to sanitary standards, the air in the room should change exactly 12 times in one hour.

For example, for my six-meter kitchen with a ceiling height of 2.7 meters, a hood with a capacity of 300 m³ / h was an excellent solution

The larger the kitchen, the more powerful the hood should be. However, in a small space, the concentration of odors increases several times, so you should not save on performance.

It is necessary to take into account other conditions that may affect the operation of the hood, for example, the throughput of the ventilation shaft in an apartment building. It is better to check in advance if there are any obstacles in the duct shaft and whether it is possible to bring the duct to the street.

Noise level

Usually the more powerful the device, the more noisy it is - sometimes when the hood is turned on at maximum speed, talking in a whisper will no longer work. Companies are working on this and are committed to producing low-noise models.

Noise level is measured in decibels. The permissible figure in standard hoods is 50-60 dB at maximum speed.

The choice of revolutions depends on the speed of the device - speeds in the hood can be up to ten. I recommend choosing a hood that works at three speeds. Most of these models are on the market.

Mode of operation

Another important indicator is the operation mode of the hood.

Most modern models are designed for both air exhaust and its circulation. In the first case, the air is completely replaced - it is discharged through the mine to the street. In the second - the air passes through the filters and returns to the room cleaned. It is better to choose a device with two modes of operation.

Some hoods also have an intensive mode. A hood with this mode will be necessary if the smells in the kitchen are very strong.


In hoods, most often two filters are installed.

The carbon filter cleans the air of odors. The grease filter traps and retains fats, prevents them from penetrating the hood. Thanks to the grease filter, no stains from fumes appear during cooking.
